I was told by Tim Neutel that during the Graduation Show of 2019 an eagle will appear in the sky above the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
Declaring an event that happens unannounced and at considerable distance above the academy building unsettles and questions all
and every aspect of what it means to present an artwork at a (graduation) show. While the factual event is displaced and highly evasive,
the mental presence of that event deeply and strongly settles in our consciousness. As such this work marks the interval in between
the factual event and the experience of that very same event, broadening the two by creating a fluctuating zone where the experience
of an event is not the inevitable consequence of experiencing that event, and where experiencing the event is not a necessary condition
for having the experience of that event. Yet, the poetic tension that Neutel achieves is in creating a situation that accommodates
a real possibility of a chance encounter between the eagle and the spectator, between the event and its experience, between expectation
and imagination, presence and what it might be.
